Open Letter To El Gato

Dear students and faculty of Los Gatos High School,

Would you call a black person the n-word? No, because it’s racist and unacceptable. In the spirit of anti-discrimination, we demand the end to using anti-gay slurs. When you say “that’s so gay” or “fag” or “dyke”, you don’t realize who hears it around you and who it is hurting. Its just the same as using the n-word. You’re discriminating against a person for something they did not ask for and cannot change—sexuality. Sexual orientation, whether it be gay, straight, or bisexual, is not chosen, just as the color of someone’s skin is not chosen. We will not stand for this discrimination and we will stop at nothing until our goal is reached—a safe school environment where no one has to avoid going to school in fear of harassment.

We’re not asking for your permission or your opinion. We don’t have to explain ourselves and we certainly don’t need your approval. It’s a right, not a privilege to be who we are.

We are sick of the hateful words and homophobic slurs. We are tired of the name calling and bullying that goes on right under the noses of school faculty. We will no longer stand by and let bullies have their way while we suffer in silence.

Who are we? We are the students of Los Gatos High School. We come from all groups and stereotypes: gays, straights, loners, jocks, bank geeks, theater kids, Asians, whites, Mexicans, Christians, Atheists, scholars, punks, emos, goths, and nerds united under one cause. Not an academic subject or a sport interest, but a passion—a passion for acceptance, equality, love, and respect for all people, regardless of their differences. We are here to be the change and make a difference.

Sincerely,

Your Gay-Straight Alliance

Are You Ready?

Hey everyone,

At my meeting with Mr. Autrey on Monday, a striking perspective enlightened me. Would you call a colored person the "N" word? No, you would not. We should no longer idly stand by and allow people to use gay, faggot, dyke, etc.as profanity. Its ridiculous that we have to say anything to people that its inappropriate. Its even worse that we have to explain ourselves. Sexuality is not something changeable, no one simply chooses to be "one way" or "another". As an individual, the only person you can be is yourself.

Its not a privilege, its a right. We're not asking for your permission, we don't have to explain ourselves, and we certainly don't need your approval to be who we are.

We are having our regular meeting this Friday @ tutorial, BE THERE! We'll be talking about ways we can stop bullying and the use of anti-gay slurs. We would like to start posting fliers in classrooms before the end of the month. Are you ready to stand up against bullying? Then take a stand and lend a hand.

If you have any slogan, fliers, poster, or shirt ideas, please bring them to this meeting!

Also, club day is this Thursday @ lunch so please stop by, say hi, bring some friends to sign up, and grab some cookies. Hope to see you there and at Friday's meeting! :)

Sincerely,
Liz Gustafson

Today's Meeting

Hello all,

Today we have our regular meeting at tutorial. Unfortunately, many members were absent due to an unexpected mandatory freshmen assembly at tutorial. Also, for those who went to Respect Rx, I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and learned something. This is for all of you...

I gave a "homework assignment" which was making a blogger account (if you do not already have one) and following this blog so you can stay updated with us, even if you don't have a facebook. We also signed up new and old members who have not submitted contact information yet. Along with this was a sign up sheet for our fundraiser at the Venue on March 11. We still need help with set up, clean up, food, drinks, and door guards. If you would like to help, please leave a comment.

As a club, we talked about bullying at LGHS and how we can stop it. We had a special visitor, the president of the HPA Club, who helped lead the discussion. We came to the conclusion that bullying at LGHS is mostly verbal, in most cases directed at non-LGBT students, and typically goes unnoticed by teachers. For this reason, I am meeting with Mr. Autrey to find a resolution to end this harassment. We also decided that before the year is out, and sooner rather than later, we should find a way to speak to middle schoolers at both Fisher and CTE. This is where the harassment, both physical and verbal, starts. As highschoolers, we must be the example and set the tone so we can end bullying where it begins (and hopefully ends).

Thank you all for reading,
Liz
